The main thing a computer gives you over a smartphone is a full-size keyboard for comfortable typing and a much larger screen. If you do not type a lot or play big PC games then a big keyboard may not be necessary for you to get things done online. Phones have gotten bigger but there is no replacement for a large screen at a comfortable viewing distance. If you need a bigger screen but not a keyboard then a tablet might be a better device yet than either a smartphone or a PC.
A 10″ Android tablet cost maybe $150 – $300 and works great for everything that doesn’t specifically require a full computer setup (or Windows). Many have a cell network card that give Internet access and make the tablet a giant smartphone.
The other thing that a full computer allows for is expansion and installing high performance components for heavy lifting like gaming, rendering, video editing, and engineering. Laptops are not generally upgrade-able but properly configured can be fully functional doing the heavy tasks listed above, again with a larger screen and keyboard.
It is all about what you need to do and the tools that best fit your needs. Many of us “need” a smartphone and a computer, others may find they can do all they need on their phone. Your mileage may vary.
