How to type symbols and special characters

To type symbols and special characters in a document or email you can type the Alt Code for the character you need, for instance, to type the ° symbol hold down the Alt key and type 0176.

You can type any regular ASCII characters and the extended drawing characters like ▒ (Alt 177) and ╣ (Alt 185) using the Alt Code of the character. Hold down the Alt key and type the numeric code for the character or symbol. See the chart below.

Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook)
In Word and Excel you can click on Insert and Symbol to show commonly used symbols including °. Click the symbol you require or More Symbols to see more options.

Open Office (Writer, Calc)
In Open Office you can click on Insert and Special Characters to show commonly used symbols including °. Scroll down to find and click the symbol you require.
